If you've paid any attention to the news or media in the last few years then you've probably heard of Shia and Sunni Muslims. However it's also quite likely that you're impression of these two elements of Islam are superficial if not entirely inaccurate. Often you hear the American Government and Media blaming the ongoing war in Iraq on a conflict between Shias and Sunnis. Similarly the entire region is often articulated along these lines, with Iran, Syria, and Hezbollah in Lebannon identified as Shia, and ex-Saddam forces in Iraq, Saudi Arabia, and much of the remainder of the Islamic world being Sunni.
I personally felt I wasn't getting enough information, and on my Interfaith show 3D Dialogue I had a discussion with two guests, Imam Syed Muhammad Rizvi, a Shia from the Ja'ffari Islamic Centre, and Imam Hamid Slimi, a Sunni from the International Muslims Organization of Toronto.
I encourage everyone to check out the video below, and hear first hand about the differences and commonalities of these two sides of Islam, in part to dispell some of the myths floating in the main stream media, but also to see a Shia Imam and a Sunni Imam sitting side by side as friends. In addition, we also discuss the current situation in Iraq, and how the war is being covered in the media.
